Dozens of peacocks, chickens, ducks and turkeys were culled from a petting zoo in Alphen aan den Rijn because bird flu was diagnosed there on Friday.
The petting zoo at Burgemeester Bruins Slotsingel will be closed on Saturday to “process the event”. It is not yet clear whether the farm will open again on Sunday.
Despite shielding measures, many chickens and turkeys have recently become ill. Many of them died. Supervisor NVWA then came by and diagnosed bird flu.
Two years ago, the petting zoo also struggled with bird flu, but at that time the virus only spread among the peacocks. “We have never experienced anything this large and so extensive before,” the NVWA says Broadcasting West.
Last week, the national cage requirement was reinstated for chickens and other birds. This measure was taken after two new bird flu outbreaks were discovered in the Netherlands. The virus was detected at a laying hen farm in Renswoude with 65,000 chickens and at a care farm with 180 chickens in the municipality of Edam-Volendam.
The cage requirement applies to all commercially kept birds, including poultry. Hobby birds that pose a risk must be shielded.
