Outbreak of Alphavirus and Equine Encephalomyelitis: The Impact on Equestrian Activities in Argentina and Preventative Measures

The Jockey Club Bariloche suspended equestrian activities due to the state of health emergency throughout the country as declared by the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (Senasa).

It happens that in the provinces of Corrientes and Santa Fé an outbreak of Alphavirus, equine encephalomyelitisa disease that dates back to 1988, the year in which it was controlled with a vaccine

Is about a viral disease is transmitted from birds to mosquitoes. These, in turn, infect horses, generating a high degree of mortality. The incubation period of the disease is 5 to 14 days.

According to Senasa, horses have a neurological condition with different symptoms such as wandering, hyperexcitation, depression or hyperthermia.

«We had an event planned for December 3, but they announced the suspension of equestrian activities throughout the country. We are waiting for the availability of vaccines because once it is applied, activities can be resumed after 15 days,” explained Carlos Lavagnino, from the normalization commission of the Jockey Club Bariloche, which has about 60 horses on its property.

«It is difficult for the outbreak to reach Bariloche because it depends on the heat and mosquitoes. Today it is concentrated in the north. The virus causes animals to experience a tremor, colic, and kills them quickly. In our case, the measure is preventive,” added Lavagnino while pointing out that although there is a batch of 100,000 vaccines in the country, it was destined for the conflict zone.

Senasa reported that the health measures are “immediate, extraordinary, exceptional and containment.” He also ratified the restriction on horse movements.

In the last few hours, the agency detected positive results for alphavirus in samples processed in Córdoba.

«All establishments that reported nervous signs or mortality of horses are subject to official interdiction with absolute restriction of movement. Likewise, Senasa also gave intervention to the Ministry of Health of the Nation and the local authorities with whom it works in an articulated manner,” they indicated.

The central recommendation is mosquito control to prevent the spread of the disease and equine vaccination against this disease. At this time, the vaccination is being coordinated with the veterinary product chambers so that the greatest number of doses are distributed in the shortest time possible.

In addition, Senasa must be notified of the presence of nervous signs in horses, reduce animal movements and avoid events that involve the concentration of horses.
