The latest data available on the flow of goods from the province of Ourense to the United Kingdom reflect a decrease of 38.5%, comparing the data of January of this year with those registered in the same month of 2020, when the pandemic had not yet caused restrictions in Europe and the Brexit agreement was being negotiated in Brussels. This agreement to exit the United Kingdom from the EU, largely responsible for this drop, has also become effective, at the worst moment of the pandemic, another factor that has also affected the fall in exports.
The United Kingdom is the third destination country for Ourense exports, after Portugal and France, and occupies the fifth place if this internationalization is at the national level. Icex breaks down this comparison into 4 groups of goods and services: agri-food, beverages, consumer goods, and industrial products and technology. It should be noted that the first reference does not include wines, -the only component of the group of beverages-, which have suffered a decrease of 92%, going from exporting a value of 213,680 euros in the first month of 2020 to only 1,615 euros in January of this year.
The sector and the agri-food SMEs of Ourense have exported last January to this country (with the Brexit agreement already in force since the first day of the year) a total of 855,000 euros in products, 10% more than in the same month of 2020 (776,820 euros). Within this group, the greatest increase occurred in the section of ‘meat products and their derivatives’ with an increase of 67.1%, going from 472,780 euros in 2020 to 789,910 in 2021, an amount that represents 92% of the total exports of this group.
The other two groups of the analysis, consumer goods and industrial products and technology, also show decreases in their exports between the two months mentioned, 92.6 and 39.5 percent, respectively. In the first of them, the decrease in fashion exports to the United Kingdom stands out, which is 93.7%, while in the second the natural stone of the province and its manufactures reduced their sales to the British country by 55.9% .
Altogether, all the exports from Ourense included in these 4 sections have suffered a decrease of 38.5%, going from a sales volume of 9,827,990 to 6,041,220 euros.
