When the word “smart ring” is mentioned, a large number of people probably have no idea that wearable electronics have come this far. And those who already know something about it will probably think mainly of Oura Ring of the Finnish startup Oura Health. Rightly so, as this company’s ring can definitely be marked the greatest pioneer in this field. Or at least in the shortlist. Its third generation is currently on sale, but I took it in hand (or rather in hand). second generation, which I will try to evaluate in the following lines. As you’ll find out, having a slightly older model doesn’t have to be a bad thing …
Oura Ring Smart Ring (2nd Generation)
In the beginning, it must be said that the Oura Ring does not seek to match the best smart watches or even surpass them. The ring performs a fraction of their function, but on the other hand it perfects most of them. But let’s start with the design first. It is very decent and minimalist (in the case of my dark matte Stealth variant, this is doubly true) and from the outside it looks like a completely normal ring on the hand. It’s hard to believe how much space electronics has been able to contain. Also a battery that will guarantee operation even for a whole week.
However, it’s not a complete hit parade for the wearer. Due to the sensors and other circuits, the ring must obviously have a minimum thickness, which therefore affects comfort. While everything is perfectly fine on the finger itself (before the final acquisition, you have the option select a size thanks to the handy swatch) and the Oura Ring is also very light, slightly thicker walls can easily push the ring into surrounding fingers if they are squeezed together. So, in general, for example, when greeting, doing various exercises or holding the shoulder strap of a bag or backpack. It should be borne in mind that sometimes Oura Ring is really uncomfortable.
Sensors located on the side of the finger “pads” ensure that it will have a ring good access to blood circulation and therefore more accurate analyzes. This elevates this type of wearable electronics above watches, which normally measure from the top of the wrist and therefore have a slightly more difficult task. Thanks to the small edges of the Oura Ring, it is very easy to see if it has accidentally turned into an unwanted position.
