Moderna said its COVID-19 vaccine generated a strong immune response and was generally well tolerated in children aged 6 to 11, citing interim data from a Phase 2/3 study.
The company added that it plans to soon provide data to US, European and other drug and health regulators.
According to Moderna, the data show that two doses of 50 micrograms of the vaccine, which is half the strength of the doses used in the vaccine given to adults, generate antibodies that neutralize the virus in children in the above age group.
“We are encouraged by the immunogenicity and safety profile of our vaccine in children aged 6 to 12 years and are pleased that the study has reached its primary immunogenicity endpoints. We look forward to submitting documents to regulators worldwide. and we remain committed to giving our share to help end the coronavirus pandemic through a vaccine for adults and children of all ages, “said CEO Stefan Bansel.
Moderna added that the two-dose vaccine is well tolerated and effective among children being tested, and that the company will soon present the results to the US Food and Drug Administration and other health regulatory agencies around the world.
Most of the side effects are mild or moderate in severity, the company said. The most common side effects are fatigue, headache, fever and pain at the injection site.
