How does the person from a poor family conquer the whole world with his talent and charm? What did he have to overcome to play in Moscow in 1987, for which he was adored by all of Italy?

He was born into a poor Milanese family. At the age of 12, he left school and got a job in a watchmaking workshop. Clock repair is still one of his favorite hobbies.
As a young man he absorbed rock and roll records. His idol is the eccentric Jerry Lee Lewis, whose stage style Adriano masterfully imitates. His sister takes a photo of him as the musician, sends the photo to a doppelgänger competition – and here’s luck! – Celentano wins. The prize money turns out to be quite spot on. Adriano created his own band and started writing songs himself.
At the age of 24, he participated in the famous music festival in San Remo. He takes second place only because he turns his back on the stage to the audience. By the way, this dance gesture will become his “trick”.
“24 thousand kisses” is recognized as the best Italian song of the decade. The singer broke the contracts and started releasing music only with his own label “Clan Celentano”.
The adored ugly
He records new compositions, acts in films, tries his hand as a director. His debut “The Superrobbery in Milan” was noticed: a mixture of burlesque, comedy and an adventure detective story about crooked thieves who decide to hide in a monastery. Gennady Poloka even quoted the ending of this film in his own film “Intervention”.
But his main film success was the collaboration with the directing duo Castellano and Pipolo: Adriano participated in eight of their projects. And in each it appears in a new image. And the audience fell madly in love with his Elia Codogno from “The Taming of the Shrew” – a kind of “reverse retelling” of Shakespeare’s comedy, where the fatal beauty (Ornella Muti) tries to re-educate a cruel misogynist.
Films with Celentano enjoyed extreme popularity in the USSR. Soviet censorship treated them leniently. These comedies satirically showed the “rotting West” and are devoid of any political nuances. And Adriano’s incredible masculine charm emanates from every frame – he is perfect for the image of the “adorable ugly man”. His bright, but completely non-standard look is complemented by incredible charm.
Family man, fan, father and grandfather
At the same time, the personal life of the artist is generally devoid of a shadow of scandal. He met his wife – actress Claudia Mori – on the set. They get married secretly, without attracting the attention of either fans or journalists. An ideal Italian, a faithful family man who adores children, and then grandchildren – this is Celentano outside of his screen image.
He is the idol of all of Italy, he respects traditions: he is a fan of his compatriots, of Milan’s “Inter”, he likes to cook and play tennis. But there are also peculiarities: for example, Adriano suffers from aerophobia and generally does not fly on planes, which is why he often refuses to travel.
Success in the USSR
However, he flew to the USSR in 1987, overcoming fear. There are two sold-out concerts at the Olympic Stadium. Celentano’s concert was filmed especially for television – and the artist secured the status of one of the most loved foreign stars in our country. However, this has been the case for 20 years – since the film “Serafino” with his participation received an award at the Moscow Film Festival.
Celentano has not acted in the cinema for a long time. He says he is not being offered good scripts. The only director I would play with today is Quentin Tarantino.
Unstoppable
But in music he is unstoppable: the album “Per Semper” becomes an international hit. And the song “Confessa” returns him to the top of the world charts again. The real pearl of his career is the record “Sleep, my love, the situation is not right”. In addition to the amazing music, arrangements, there is also a topical sense – from environmental issues to touching childhood nostalgia.
He continues to be active. He released a fantastic animated film “Adriano” – about a watchmaker who copes with a number of problems that have been assigned to him. The image of the main character and his companion was copied by Celentano himself and Claudia Mori, the soundtrack is Adriano’s songs. Creates a series of albums with the singer Mina Mazzini, another star of the 70s.
Periodically appears on television. Sometimes he organizes big concerts, but not far from home and family, in Milan.
