The Société des Mouettes genevoises navigation SA (SMGN) manages a lake navigation company in Geneva (Switzerland) created on March 1, 1897. Its boats are commonly known under the name of Mouettes genevoises.
The company’s radius of action is Geneva harbor, where it serves 4.3 km of lines (lines M1, M2, M3 and M4). Les Mouettes have been sailing all year round since 2004.
Les Mouettes genevoises follows a service linking Les Pâquis to Eaux-Vives and created in 1825 by Edward Church, a businessman and United States consul in France. For reasons of slowness and noise, the existence of this merry-go-round boat (paddle steamer driven by horses turning on the bridge) is however brief.
Fleet composition
- 3 historic wooden boats with 30 to 50 seats.
- 1 steel hull boat with 50 seats.
- 2 boats with electro-solar propulsion of 60 places.
Evolution of the fleet
In the absence of the development of new lines, the SMGN is looking into the construction of new, more modern boats. Projects are currently under study with the collaboration of the State of Geneva.
The new landing stage at Châteaubriand (at the level of the street of the same name overlooking the Quai Wilson / right bank) has been in service since 2010. It has replaced the old landing stage of the Perle du Lac, less well connected to the lines of the Geneva public transport and inaccessible to disabled people.
