Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat an infection of the nerve in a tooth. Root canal treatment is also called endodontic treatment. The pulp is made up of soft tissue that includes nerves and blood vessels. Physical irritation from deep decay or large filling, severe gum disease, or trauma (such as physical shock to a tooth or jaw) can damage the tooth which will require endodontic treatment. During endodontic treatment, once the bacteria are eliminated, the root canal is filled in and the tooth is restored with an amalgam, composite or crown.

Most treatments can be done in one visit.
