OUR OPINION. “Without a helmet, Maarten (11) – son of a colleague – would not have survived a bicycle accident on Thursday. For him and all those other victims there is ‘Veloveilig Vlaanderen’”
Colleague Karl was already impatient when his 11-year-old son Maarten was not home for dinner on Thursday, and even more so when he heard the siren of the ambulance. “It won’t.” But it was. Scooped up by a van. Crack in his eye socket, severe concussion. But it could have been so much worse. “His bicycle helmet saved his life, sir,” the emergency doctor said. HLN launches the campaign ‘Veloveilig Vlaanderen’ this weekend. We do it for Martin. And all those other children and adults who are victims of cycling every day.
