“Our movement has only just begun”: Trump has already given his farewell speech (and promised to pray for Biden’s success)

on one farewell speech, videotaped and not live on television, Donald Trump, who stops being President of the United States this Wednesday at noon, said some obvious things and others that differed from his almost always conflicting tone. He promised to “pray” for Joe Biden’s success, appealed to the union and admitted that all Americans see “horror” what happened at the Capitol on January 6. At the same time, he left a warning: “Now, as I prepare to hand over power to a new government at noon on Wednesday, I want you to know that the movement we started is just beginning.”

It is clearly a sign for anyone who hears him from the trenches of this fight that still occupies the minds of many Americans, convinced that Biden won through a widespread fraud that Trump has always fueled. And if the warlike metaphors seemed an exaggeration until the invasion of the Capitol by hundreds of very violent supporters of the still President, now the matter is treated with much more care – just look at the capital, Washington DC, where Biden takes office this Wednesday – fair, to see the redoubling of the care: there are more soldiers in a few square kilometers than deployed in two of the most dangerous war scenarios in the world – Iraq and Afghanistan.

After this promise, Trump again moderated the speech. “Political violence is an attack on everything we cherish as Americans and can never be tolerated. Our belief in the fact that the nation must serve its citizens will not diminish, it will become stronger and stronger as time goes by.”

After a few paragraphs about his arrival at the White House (“as a person outside the system”), Trump thanked the “millions of patriotic workers across the country” for helping him build “the greatest political movement in history” from United States.

Among his Administration’s list of successes, Trump highlighted “building the strongest economy ever”, introducing a major tax cut and ending “fatal job creation” regulations, the agreements he reached between countries without prior diplomatic relations (notably between Israel and the Gulf countries), increased contributions to NATO’s budget and the “historic and monumental” tariffs imposed on China.

Furthermore, and this is in fact a point that even critics praise, Trump has not started wars anymore – and the still President of the USA also mentioned that. But in fact, it is not yet known how many wars Trump wanted to wage and was prevented by his generals, advisers or lawyers. At least one, with Iran, because of its nuclear enrichment program, would be able to prevent. “Everything we did was under the slogan ‘America first’ because we all wanted to make America great again,” said Trump.

After wishing Biden good luck and thanking Mike Pence, his vice president, for his support and service, Trump concluded with a request: “Now more than ever we must unite around our shared values, overcome the party grudge and forge our common destiny ”.

Trump leaves the White House with the lowest approval rating ever, with only 33% of Americans fans of their conduct until the last minute, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University. Disapproval is 60%, the worst since Jimmy Carter left office in 1981 at 44%.
