Since the end of the 2000s, new trendy addresses have continued to join the ageless antique dealers, wigmakers and jewelers who until then peacefully vegetated in this micro desert between the Flatiron and the Empire State Building. Overview of our best addresses in the NoMad district.
The tables of The Good Life in the NoMad:
• Shake Shack, l’institution. For this chain of hamburgers, one of Manhattan’s most famous, it all started in Madison Square Park in 2001 with a pop-up hot dog stand for a summer. In 2004, Danny Meyer received authorization from the city to settle permanently in the park and participated, in his own way, in the renewal of the district. This first restaurant will make small, first in the rest of New York, then in all the United States, before conquering the world. In particular, there are four Shake Schak brands in London. However, New Yorkers and tourists alike continue to throng Madison Square Park, as if on a pilgrimage. It is, of course, a must when visiting the NoMad, for a ShackBurger and a few cheddar fries.
• Eleven Madison Park, triple star. This is all the bipolar charm of NoMad. If it is a burger kiosk that has put the district back on the map, it is a starred restaurant, among the best tables in the world, which has given it its letters of nobility. Daniel Humm and Will Guidara got their three stars in 2012, just three years after buying Eleven Madison Park from Danny Meyer – again him. Here you can enjoy elegant revisits of great New York classics, from eggs Benedict to sundaes. They also participated in the opening of NoMad (the hotel), taking the reins of the kitchens. Restaurateurs viscerally attached to their neighborhood, and an already legendary restaurant. 11 Madison Ave, tel. +1 212-889-0905, www.elevenmadisonpark.com.
• What else ? For lunch, we turn to Made Nice, a colorful little address that serves amazing juices in plastic cups and generous dishes, green but greedy. At dinner, we go to Smith, a tavern full of good things, and we order oysters, a chicken cooked under bricks, the house specialty, or a sea bass with Brussels sprouts and leeks, fondant. Finally, in the NoMad, as in the rest of New York, brunch is a must. The Good Life choose the one from Blackbarn, around a large table of pastrami, chicken waffles, cauliflower steak, sweet potato pancakes … yum!
