The Oude Maas near Rotterdam was blocked for hours between Rhoon and Hoogvliet after a collision between two tankers. The inland vessels transport hazardous substances. Gas oil flowed from the forward engine rooms of both ships, which was stopped by special floating screens.
The collision happened early this morning. The tankers collided head on for unknown reasons. Both ships have damage to the front, reports Rijnmond. One ship remains afloat by itself, the other has deliberately sailed against a groyne, in order to keep the prow up.
No one was injured in the collision. The ships transport slightly liquid bitumen and biodiesel. These tanks were not hit. The seaport police are investigating. Around half past ten, the Oude Maas was reopened to shipping.
