Ouch! Why is a locomotive driving here on the road through Hamburg?

A locomotive was transported on the road through Hamburg on Friday night. It came from Kassel by low loader and is to be shipped to New York.

The 85-ton special locomotive is destined for the USA and is now to be transported by ship to New York.

The intermediate destination in the Waltershof district was reached at around 1.30 a.m. Before that, the heavy haulage made its way through the Hanseatic city and had to be very careful, especially under bridges.

Together with the locomotive, the low loader reached a height of 4.50 meters. Many places quickly became the bottleneck. They had to be passed with precision work and at a snail’s pace.

Some street signs also had to be removed and reassembled after passing. The transport nevertheless went smoothly.

In the meantime there was something jammed on the A7 because the trailer was not allowed to be overtaken.

The journey started on Monday at the Bombardier plant in Kassel (Hessen), as the Hessenschau reported. Usually, the locomotives produced there are actually transported to their place of use by rail.

But that didn’t work for two reasons, explained project manager Thorsten Hölscher of the Hessenschau. “For one thing, the axle load of the locomotive is far too heavy.”

This is around 32 tons, and a maximum of 22.5 tons is allowed in Germany. On the other hand, it is a locomotive for the US market, said Hölscher. “The train protection technology that is installed is not permitted here.”

The rail vehicle is to run for New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) in the future. The railroad tracks between New Jersey and New York pose a particular challenge because they are only partially electrified. This is why the locomotive has both an electric and a diesel motor. This enables a journey without changing between New Jersey and Pennsylvania Station (NYC).

It is the first example of the revised Bombardier ALP-45DP series, which complies with stricter emissions standards, and bears the number 4535. It should reach its actual destination in mid-January.

16 locomotives of the same type are to follow. NJ Transit only ordered eight more vehicles in July. So there will probably be a lot of heavy transports from Kassel to Hamburg.
