Ouch! The Highest Case of Indonesian Malware in the Asia Pacific

Telset.id, Jakarta – Through its latest research, Security Endpoint Threat Report, Microsoft Asia Pacific found that Indonesia has the highest level of malware cases in the Asia Pacific region.

This finding comes from analysis from a variety of Microsoft data sources, including 8 trillion threat signals that are received and analyzed by companies every day. This covers a period of 12 months, from January to December 2019.

“As security defense develops and attackers rely on new techniques, Microsoft’s unique access to billions of threat signals every day allows us to collect data and insights to inform our response to cyber attacks,” said Mary Jo Schrade, Assistant General Counsel, Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit, Microsoft Asia.

The Microsoft Security Endpoint Threat report aims to create a better understanding of the emerging threat picture and help organizations improve their cyber security levels by reducing the impact of increasingly sophisticated attacks.

Indonesia is recorded to have the highest rate of malware cases, which is 10.68 percent in 2019. Despite a decline of 39 percent last year, this is still 2 times higher than the regional average.

Indonesia is also listed as having the second highest rate of ransomware cases in the entire Asia Pacific region, which is 0.14 percent, despite a 46 percent decline last year. This is 2.8 times higher than the regional average.

“Countries that have higher piracy rates and lower cyber security knowledge tend to be more affected by cyber threats. Patching software, using legitimate software, and keeping it updated can reduce the possibility of malware and ransomware infections, “said Haris Izmee, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia.

With the turn of the new year, COVID-19 has changed the landscape and remains a major concern for individuals, organizations and governments around the world.

Since the outbreak began, Microsoft Intelligence Protection team data shows that every country in the world has seen at least one COVID-19 themed attack, and the volume of successful attacks in countries affected by the outbreak seems to be rising, due to increased fear and the desire for the latest information.

Of the millions of phishing messages that are targeted globally every day, around 60,000 are themed COVID-19, with malicious attachments or malicious URLs (website addresses).

Attackers disguised themselves as established entities such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Ministry of Health to enter inboxes.

“We found that the COVID-19-themed threats were mostly old attacks that had been slightly altered to be associated with a pandemic. After users click on this dangerous link, attackers can infiltrate the network, steal information, and get money from their attacks, “Harris explained. (HR / IF)
