Idaho passes anti-abortion law

The US state of Idaho adopted a new law on Monday March 14 prohibiting voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) after six weeks. An attack on the right to American abortion which follows a similar law in force in Texas since September. Only one exception is allowed for rape or incest in both laws. In Idaho, a family member of a “pre-born” child who files a complaint against the mother and the people who could have helped her have an abortion can receive a $20,000 reward. In the United States, the right to abortion is guaranteed by a 1973 Supreme Court ruling which legalizes abortion up to 23 weeks of pregnancy.

Worrying heat waves at the poles

Temperatures in Antarctica reached record levels on Saturday March 19: they were 40 degrees above normal in places. At the North Pole, the difference was 30 degrees. Scientists are concerned about these figures which could mean that climate change is accelerating. The melting of the ice, at this rate, could cause other climatic disasters. These changes will be irreversible according to scientists. The latest IPCC assessment report published in February 2022 notably highlighted the effects of climate change on societies and ecosystems and our means of adaptation.

Abusive detention in administrative detention centers

Five associations working with foreigners in an irregular situation in administrative detention centers published their annual report on Thursday March 17. They claim that in 2021, they suffered “abusive”, “disproportionate” and “indiscriminate” confinement. Last year, 42,353 people were locked up awaiting deportation for an average of 22 days in mainland France, an increase of 32%. France is the first European country in terms of issuing deportation orders.

Holi celebration in India

The thousand-year-old Hindu tradition of celebrating “Holi” each year during the transition from winter to spring took place from March 18 to 20. Also called, feast of colors, the Indians sprinkle themselves with different bright colors while the priests bless them with colored jets of water. Each color has its own energy. Green for harmony, orange for optimism, blue for vitality and red for joy and love. Historically, it gives hope for future prosperous harvests and for the fertility of the land.

Julie Doucet crowned Grand Prix of the Angoulême comic book festival

Each year, professional comic strip authors award the Grand Prix to an artist for all of his or her work. In 2022, Canadian author Julie Doucet was rewarded ahead of Pénélope Bagieu and Catherine Meurisse. She is one of the figures of alternative and feminist comics. She starts with her own fanzine Dirty Plotte, she recounts in black and white her daily life as a woman. In the 90s, she stood out in an environment still strongly dominated by men. In November 2021, the publishing house L’Association published Maxiplottea 400-page anthology of the works of Julie Doucet.
