Every Monday morning, the news you missed, the ones you didn’t understand, and the ones you don’t care about: in other words, the week’s news summarized.
Idaho passes anti-abortion law
The US state of Idaho adopted a new law on Monday March 14 prohibiting voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) after six weeks. An attack on the right to American abortion which follows a similar law in force in Texas since September. Only one exception is allowed for rape or incest in both laws. In Idaho, a family member of a “pre-born” child who files a complaint against the mother and the people who could have helped her have an abortion can receive a $20,000 reward. In the United States, the right to abortion is guaranteed by a 1973 Supreme Court ruling which legalizes abortion up to 23 weeks of pregnancy.
Worrying heat waves at the poles
Temperatures in Antarctica reached record levels on Saturday March 19: they were 40 degrees above normal in places. At the North Pole, the difference was 30 degrees. Scientists are concerned about these figures which could mean that climate change is accelerating. The melting of the ice, at this rate, could cause other climatic disasters. These changes will be irreversible according to scientists. The latest IPCC assessment report published in February 2022 notably highlighted the effects of climate change on societies and ecosystems and our means of adaptation.
