OtherSide Entertainment is giving up; Tencent takes care of the development

The Chinese giant Tencent has the rights to System shock 3 acquired from the current developer studio OtherSide Entertainment. The acquisition confirmed OtherSide Entertainment in one Blog post, after reports of chaos and layoffs in February 2020 (we reported).

According to Walter Somol (Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at OtherSide Entertainment), they are excited that Tencent will advance the system shock series. “As a small indie studio, it was a real challenge for us to run the project on our own. We are confident that Tencent’s extensive skills and expertise as a leading gaming company will take the series to new heights,” added Somol. No information has been provided on the current status of System Shock 3.

Apparently, Tencent did not take over the rights to the brand (system shock) or intellectual property. Stephen Kick, CEO of Nightdive Studios, made it clear via Twitter that they would continue to hold the franchise rights. The Nightdive Studios originally licensed their property to OtherSide Entertainment to develop System Shock 3.

Tencent has stakes in numerous games companies, including an Riot Games (100%), Funcom (100%), Supercell (84.3%), Grinding Gear Games (80%), Epic Games (40%), Glu Mobile (14.46%), Bluehole (11.5%), Activision Blizzard (5%), Paradox Interactive (5%), Ubisoft (5%), Miniclip, Platinum Games and Yager.
