The pandemic has been running for more than two years, this country has even just reported its first case of COVID-19. It is the Cook Islands, a country in the South Pacific that recorded its first case after preparing to reopen tourism for tourists.
Quoted from ABCNewsThis country of about 17,000 people has one of the highest vaccination rates globally. At least 96 percent of the population has received the full dose of vaccine, aka received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The first case of COVID-19 in the Cook Islands was brought by a 10-year-old boy. He was previously quarantined after returning from a repatriation flight with his family last Thursday.
Prime Minister Mark Brown said this in a statement. The boy is believed to have just returned from New Zealand.
The island nation, which shut itself off from the world when the pandemic hit, has announced plans to resume quarantine-free travel with New Zealand on January 14.
“We have been preparing ourselves for when we reopen our borders,” Brown said.
How was the close contact of the Cook Islands’ first positive COVID-19 case?
All other passengers tested negative for COVID-19. However, Brown said the boy still tested positive for COVID-19 after being retested before leaving quarantine.
