other (more dangerous) items have been stolen

New episode in the case of massive hacking of Twitter. Late on Friday, the social network posted a message on its blog for the first time, reporting on the situation and the last news about research.

The worst event in the history of Twitter experienced a new twist. According to the Twitter Support account, the hacking would have served the attackers to steal much more than 100,000 euros. The platform confirmed that “Up to eight” accounts have had their personal data stolen. These would be addresses, associated phone numbers, but also private messages – even deleted.

“The attackers have taken the extra step of downloading account information using the tool “Your Twitter data”, could we learn on the blog of the social network, then confirmed the evening on the Twitter account of the support. As pointed out Forbes, rumors and fears have been mounting over the past few days, about whether the attackers had been able to steal much more than money, in view of the certified accounts in which they had been able to take control.

As a reminder, in addition to giants like Apple, Uber, Bitcoin and Binance, the massive hacking against Twitter last Wednesday also affected big figures in the economy like Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, but also political figures like Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Piracy with far more serious consequences?

In the aftermath of this spectacular event in the history of social networks, in which 130 of the most important accounts of the platform were hacked (except Donald Trump, find out why), the FBI announced that it had opened an investigation on its side. Now that the observation of direct consequences is over, the time has come to step back. Unfortunately, there is evidence that the case could go much further.

Twitter is reassuring: up to 8 accounts have been affected, and these are not certified Twitter accounts. But whatever. The case could take a very different turn: from the “simple” financial scam, hacking could actually have been used to recover critical personal data.

One of the mysterious points concerns the conduct of the attackers regarding the 130 accounts under their control. Of these, only 45 of them have had their passwords reset, and nothing explains “Why they would not have done it on others”asked Richard Lawler, a journalist at Engadget.

According to The Verge, the consequences could be all the more serious when Twitter stores deleted messages (DM) on its servers, as long as one or other of the correspondents decides to keep the conversation.

Thus, during their recovery of personal account data, the attackers could have recovered very precious information, which would be worth much more than the 100,000 euros of a bitcoin scam far from being modest and without consequence on network security social.
