The classic play ‘Othello’ has been reborn in a modern setting in an underground bunker.

Reporter Shin Woong-jin delivers performances worth watching, such as ‘Youngji’, a youth drama depicting the process of finding one’s self, and ‘Gwangju’, a musical depicting the 5.18 Democratization Uprising.

The Towol Traditional Play Series, which had been suspended due to COVID-19, resumed after three years.

The play selected for the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Seoul Arts Center is ‘Othello’, one of Shakespeare’s four great tragedies.

The love between general Osello and his wife Desdemona, and the betrayal of his subordinate Iago, depicting human nature and psychology well in the course of catastrophe.

Two actors Park Ho-san and Yoo Tae-woong, who are classmates in the Department of Theater and Film at Chung-Ang University, take turns playing the main character Othello, and prominent supporting characters such as Lee Ja-ram, who is also famous as a singer, appear.

A modern sense was added with costumes and lighting, and the bunker-shaped stage, which made the most of the height and depth of the Towol Theater, is impressive.

‘Youngji’, an outsider, transfers to ‘Byeongmokan’, a seemingly flawless town.

It represents the cry of children who lead their friends and reject the existing social standards to find themselves.

Although it is a youth play, it is a play that adults can face and receive comfort from their past selves that they could not confidently express.

It is a musical that reproduces the fervent shouts of the martial law troops deployed in Gwangju and the citizens who oppose it, 43 years ago on that historic day.

It is being held in Gwangju during the week of the 5.18 Democratization Movement, and this is the fourth season.

During a demonstration performance on Broadway in the U.S. in October of last year, it was praised by the local media as “a story that anyone can relate to” and “Asia’s Les Misérables” in Japan.
