Otar Joseliani: Award-Winning Georgian Film Director Condemns Putin as “Murderer”

Born in Georgia in 1934, Joseliani’s best-known films are the film trilogy “Falling Leaves”, “The Song of the Starling” (1970) and “Pastoral”, which won awards at international festivals in Cannes and Berlin. Several of Joseliani’s films have also received awards at the Venice International Film Festival. In 1999, he was awarded the European Film Academy Award.

The director lived and worked in France since the beginning of the 80s. He has also made documentaries such as Georgia Alone (1994).

In 2002, Joseliani received the Silver Bear as the best director at the Berlin International Film Festival for the film “Monday Morning”.

In 2006, Joseliani was appointed Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor.

Otar Joseliani has often criticized the Russian authorities, especially in connection with the wars in Chechnya and against Georgia in 2008. According to the director, in the war with Georgia, Russian soldiers showed themselves as “robbers and rapists”.

In 2022, the director sharply condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling Vladimir Putin a “murderer” and comparing him to Hitler.

A memorial to Otar Joseliani has been erected in Riga on Mārstaļu Street, reports “Kino Raksti”.
