Ostrava to Build State-of-the-Art Football Stadium
The city of Ostrava, Czech Republic, is set to construct a cutting-edge football stadium, marking a significant investment in the city’s sporting infrastructure adn a revival of a beloved local landmark. The new stadium, slated for the Bazaly site—the historic home of Baník Ostrava from 1959 to 2015—will be a world-class facility, capable of hosting international matches, including those featuring the czech national team.
The aspiring project will involve an international architectural competition, drawing in globally renowned firms with expertise in designing and building large-scale sporting venues. Gabriela Pokorná, a spokesperson for the Ostrava municipality, explained the city’s vision: ”The aim of the architectural competition is to find the most suitable design for a modern football stadium that will meet contemporary requirements and trends in the field of operation. The city wants to build a new modern football stadium, which will enable the holding of international matches, including the Czech national football team.”
Pokorná emphasized the city’s commitment to creating a top-tier facility. “Therefore, they will be a guarantee that their solution will be of high quality, timeless and, above all, feasible,” she stated, highlighting the selection process’s focus on securing a design that is both aesthetically pleasing and practically sound.
The project, estimated at 2.5 billion Czech crowns (approximately $110 million USD), will accommodate roughly 20,000 spectators. The deadline for architectural submissions is January 24, 2025, with the winning design announced in November 2025. A presentation of the proposals is scheduled for December 2025. The new stadium will adhere to the BREEAM sustainability standard and include amenities such as a Baník Ostrava museum, restaurants, fan shops, and guided tour facilities.
The return of Baník Ostrava to Bazaly marks a significant moment for the city. The team had previously played at the Municipal Stadium in Ostrava-Vítkovice due to the inadequacy of the old Bazaly stadium. However, the city recognized the challenges of sharing a facility with other athletes and the need for dedicated athletic spaces. The city’s acquisition of the Bazaly site in 2013 for approximately 115 million crowns, a move that prevented the club’s bankruptcy, paved the way for this ambitious redevelopment.
The revitalization of Bazaly is not just about football; it’s about community revitalization. The project reflects Ostrava’s commitment to its sporting heritage and its vision for a vibrant future. The new stadium promises to be a landmark not only for the city but also for the Czech Republic, setting a new standard for modern football venues.
