Osteoporosis Only Attacks Parents, Really? : Okezone Trends

The Ministry of Health said that all humans experience bone mass formation from the time they are in the womb to adulthood and peak at the age of 20.

At the age of 35 years, bone density has decreased slowly until the age of 50 years. Women who have experienced menopause are more at risk of developing osteoporosis than men.

This is caused by reduced levels of estrogen, which plays an important role in maintaining bone density. Therefore, through the commemoration of World Osteoporosis Day which falls on October 20, 2020, it is hoped that the public will be more aware in maintaining bone health.

“Osteoporosis is a condition of reduced bone mass (porous) which is often called a Silent Killer because it is silent and often has no symptoms until the first fracture occurs,” said dr. Arif Soemarjono, MD, Sp.KFR, FASCM some time ago.

In addition, Dr. Arif also explained that there is often a myth that only parents get osteoporosis. In fact, menopausal women are also more at risk of developing osteoporosis. Menopause in women can occur at various ages.

“There are several osteoporosis myths circulating in society such as only menopausal women who can develop osteoporosis, osteoporosis can only occur in old age, osteoporosis does not cause fractures, osteoporosis sufferers can feel their bones are getting weaker, joint pain is caused by obesity and gout,” explained Dr. Arif.

Apart from osteoporosis, there is also an enlarged bone disorder that causes inflammation of the joints. This makes sufferers often feel joint pain or aches.

“Osteoarthritis is inflammation of the joints and can be caused by obesity, enlarged bones (bone hypertrophy) and bone lumps due to overgrowth (osteophyte formation or spurs),” he said.

Therefore, it is important for people to maintain health, especially bone density. Basically, each person’s daily calcium needs range from 800 – 1000mg and can be obtained from food consumed.

Sports

“There are many efforts we can do to avoid osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, including eating nutritious foods, sunbathing in the sun, a healthy lifestyle, exercising that does not burden joints such as walking or cycling, and consumption of calcium-containing supplements can help maintain bone health, “concluded Dr. Arif.
