Ostapenko defeated Ukrainian tennis player Angelina Kalinin in two sets with 6-4, 6-2. Alona ranks 16th in the WTA ranking and has been eliminated from the tournament with the same number. Kalinin, on the other hand, is ranked 52nd.
Ostapenko has always beaten Kalinin in all three matches in her career. Alona’s next opponent will be the winner of the duel between the Czech Petra Kvitova and the US tennis player Allison Riske-Armitraj.
Ostapenko has also entered the doubles, where in a duet with her usual partner Ludmila Kichenok from Ukraine, both have been seeded sixth.
Alona had not played in tournaments since the Wimbledon championship.
One of the season’s most important tournaments outside of the “Grand Slam” level is taking place in Toronto, bringing together all the TOP10 tennis players. The tournament with a prize fund of more than 2.5 million US dollars on hard surfaces will last until August 14. The winner will earn 900 rating points.
Tennis players in North America are preparing for the last “Grand Slam” tournament of the season, the US Open Championship, which will start on the last Monday of August.
