In the fight for a place in the semifinals, Alona lost to Romanian Irina Kameliai Begu in straight sets 3-6, 0-6. Ostapenko is in 18th place in the WTA rankings, while Begu is in 34th place.
Begu served both more accurately and more efficiently, and her superiority was particularly evident in the runs she scored on second serves.
Alona, seeded seventh in the tournament, previously defeated Czech player Karolina Pliskova (WTA 31), for whom she earned 55 world ranking points.
Ostapenko is also in doubles, where she partnered Ukraine’s Lyudmila Kichenok on Wednesday to secure a place in the quarterfinals, and will face Ekaterina Alexandrova and China’s Shua Zhang on Thursday. In doubles, Ostapenko and Kichenok started the tournament in the second round.
The tournament will take place on Adelaide’s hard courts, with the women’s singles competing for a prize pool of over $700,000, with the winner earning 470 singles ranking points. Immediately following the first tournament of the season, a similar tournament will be held in Adelaide.
In the first tournaments of the year, tennis players are also preparing for the first “Grand Slam” tournament of the season, the Australian Open Championship, which will take place in Melbourne from January 16 to 29.
