Ostapenko played in the first round in two sets with 6-7 (1-7), 1-6 conceded to Spaniard Paulos Badosa, who was placed with the fifth number. Ostapenko ranks 28th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), while Badosa is the world’s ninth racket.
The loss to Ostapenko in the first round secured one point in the world rankings, but she will continue in the doubles tournament in Sydney, where she will play the first game against Indonesian Beatrice Gumulius and Jessie Rompis in pairs with Ukrainian tennis player Lyudmila Kichenok.
The tournament with more than $ 700,000 in prize money will end on January 15 and the winner will earn 470 points.
Latvia’s second racket Anastasia Sevastova did not participate in the tournaments in the last week before the Australian Open. Both of Latvia’s strongest tennis players are guaranteed a place in the main competition of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, which will start on January 17.
