Ostapenko continues mightily in Paris – the world’s fourth racket has been defeated Plīškova / Article / LSM.lv

Latvian tennis player Alona Ostapenko defeated the Czech Karolina Plīškovs in the second round of the French Open Championship on Thursday, who was placed with the second number in the prestigious tournament, according to the organizers.

Ostapenko’s game against the world’s fourth racket was superior in two sets with 6-4, 6-2, showing both the usual impressive attack and the previously not so stable variety and quality performance in various elements of the game.

Alona will play the next game in the last Grand Slam of the season against the winner of American Sloan Stevens and Spanish tennis player Paul Badosa’s duel.

After entering the third round, a smiling Ostapenko told the organizers in an interview that he focused on good merits, because he faced a severe test against such a strong opponent. Alona added that he tried to play aggressively and use his opportunities.

Playing his characteristic attack pressure tennis, Alona started the match with a quick point on the opponent’s serve. She was also the first to manage to hold her edge, securing a 3-1 lead. Ostapenko’s services were of good quality, but in the middle of the first set Plīškova improved the reception and was able to balance the result – 3-3. The 28-year-old Czech did not feel comfortable in the style of play forced by Alona and lost her point in the seventh game again. In the final game, Ostapenko constantly forced the opponent to make a mistake, serving for the victory in the set and did not enter the long games.

Alona convincedly Alona started the second set, leading 2-0. Close to a decisive break in the second set, she was in the fifth game, but Plīškova managed to play the break ball and not lose another point in her serve. Another excellent game with a point in the opponent’s serve gave Alona a 5-2 lead. Ostapenko used the opportunity to secure the victory in his match in his eighth game, which turned out to be more nervous.

Pliskov was a world leader three years ago, but in the Grand Slam tournaments he only played in the title match at the 2016 US Open. In Paris, her best result is the semi-finals in 2017, when Ostapenko became the winner of the French Open.

Ostapenko started the last Grand Slam of the year with a victory in the first round over American Madison Brengl. 23-year-old Alona ranks 43rd in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) this week.

It has already been reported that Ostapenko, in pairs with Canadian Gabriel Dabrovsky, overcame the first round of the French Open Women’s Doubles and in the next match for the quarterfinals will go to the pitch against the Japanese duo Misaki Doi and Romanian tennis player Monika Nikuleski.

Latvia’s second racket Anastasia Sevastov does not play in Paris due to injury.

The French Open Clay Championship will run until October 11, with tennis players also competing for a € 38 million prize pool.
