The eighth-seeded Ostapenko lost to Aleksandra Sasnoviča in two sets 2-6, 2-6 in the first round in Ostrava, finishing the tournament with a point in the standings. Alona is in 16th place in the WTA rankings, while Sasnovića is in 31st.
Sasnoviča was much more efficient at scoring in first serve and also lost just two points in her serving games. On the other hand, on Ostapenko’s serve, her opponent won six points.
Ostapenko played the final in Seoul in September, but lost the first match in the next two tournaments, not even making it through the first round a week ago in Tallinn.
The tournament in the Czech Republic will run until 9 October, with tennis players playing on hard courts and competing for a prize pool of over € 600,000. The winner will earn 470 evaluation points. Three of the five highest ranked players in the WTA rankings have applied for the tournament in Ostrava, including leader of the ranking from Poland, Iga Šviontek.
