A 55-year-old sacked OSS was fired in the Ferrara area. He administered Tachipirina to Patient allergic to the drug. A nurse is also suspended.
A Operator social health 55 years old was fired on the spot in the province of Ferrara after procuring anaphylactic shock to a collaborating patient, allergic to Tachipirina. The OSS administered a Paracetamol tablet without informing the Nurse on duty with him during the night shift and without checking for any allergies or intolerance to drugs by the requesting user.
According to what has been learned, the patient would have rang the bell several times during the night for a severe toothache, repeatedly asking for a “sedative”. L’US several times he would pretend nothing happened until, after yet another ringing, he would decide of his will to provide the user with a 1000 Tachipirina (orosoluble).
The OSS would not have informed the nurse on duty with him, who was resting in the middle of the night.
At the morning bed round the surprise: the Patient was agitated, edematous, was breathing hard. Clear the triggering of an allergic reaction. But what for?
The Nurse, aware of the gravity of the situation, immediately alerted the 118 Service, which intervened after a few minutes by centralizing the Patient.
The colleague was unable to explain anything to the Doctor and Nurse of the Territorial Emergency, also because he was unaware of the administration of the drug by the OSS.
The Nurse asked for guidance from the OSS who, after the first hesitation, confessed everything. The next day he was referred to the health management of the nursing home where both worked.
The OSS was immediately suspended and then fired on the spot after 10 days. The Nurse was suspended without pay for 15 days and was “pardoned” only because he was not guilty from a subjective point of view. However, he was reported to the OPI to which he is registered to verify any behavior not in keeping with the dictates of the Code of Ethics.
The operator was also denounced for abuse of the profession, while the objective responsibility of the Nurse is clear, who had the obligation to supervise the OSS (which remains support staff).
At the end of the fair the patient was saved and returned to the facility. Scared, but happy to have overcome such an important allergic crisis.
Now the Management of the Nursing Home, in agreement with the Head of Healthcare Activities and the Doctor, has decided to lock all the drugs and to operate a computerized verification system relating to the administration and actual intake of drugs by the guests. The software also promptly reports any allergies and intolerances.
We just hope that similar events will not happen in the future!
