The fire at the Vice Versa distribution center on Kanaalstraat in Oss was brought under control after more than 28 hours, the Brabant-Noord safety region reported on Saturday. The entire building has been lost. It was a large warehouse of 300 by 150 meters that was full of food. The fire is still being extinguished.
The seat of the fire was in a large cold room where it was minus 20 degrees. This caused the fire hoses to freeze and the ground to become slippery due to frozen fire extinguishing water. Because extinguishing the fire proved difficult, the fire brigade opted for the “burn down scenario”, according to a spokesperson for the safety region, allowing the building to burn out in a controlled manner and ensuring that the fire would not spread to adjacent buildings. That worked. More than 250 firefighters were on duty.
The fire broke out around 4:30 am on Friday morning. After the first extinguishing work, the fire seemed to be contained, but it flared up again during the day. According to a spokesperson for the safety region, the fact that the fire was able to last for so long was due to the size of the warehouse and the fact that all food was stacked on pallets and in racks several meters high.
The municipality of Oss advises local residents not to pick up soot particles in their garden with their bare hands, but with gloves. Larger particles must be reported to the municipality of Oss. People must also be careful that their pet does not ingest soot particles. Farmers in the area have been asked to keep their livestock indoors for the time being.
