Oslo University Women’s Choir Wins 1st Place at International Baltic Sea Choir Competition

The Oslo University women’s choir led by conductor Marita Tendele Bodsberga Veide has become the winner of the 1st place and “Grand Prix” award of the sixth International Baltic Sea Choir Competition, the representatives of the competition organizers informed.

The choir received the Jūrmala city cup and 3,500 euros as a prize.

The mixed choir “Gratia Choir” from Indonesia, led by the conductor Alfonso Andrik Wiratmas, won the second place and a cash prize of 2000 euros.

The mixed choir “St Jacobs Vokalensemble” from Sweden, under the leadership of conductor Mikael Vedar, won the third place and a prize of 1000 euros, as well as the special prize of the Dzintari concert hall.

Marita Tendele Bodsberga Veide was recognized as the best conductor of the competition. She and the Women’s Choir of the University of Oslo were recognized as the best interpreters of the obligatory piece – Rihard Dubra’s opus Hail, O Star of the Ocean.

The mixed choir “Gratia Choir” was recognized as the audience favorite award, as well as the most attractive on stage. But the mixed chamber choir “Alumni Heidelberg” from Germany won the jury’s recognition and the “Musica Baltica” publishing house award “For the best interpretation of a unison composition”.

Choirs from Latvia entered the top six, the mixed choir “Austrums” (conductor Ārijs Šķepasts) entering the final of the competition and taking 5th place, while the mixed choir “Norise” (conductor Alice Konkēviča-Upīte) won 6th place in the competition.

The sixth International Baltic Sea Choir Competition took place from September 22 to 24 in Jurmala, in the Dzintari Concert Hall and gathered choir singers from nine countries of the world – Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Ireland, Bulgaria, Indonesia and Latvia.

The performance of the choirs was evaluated by a professional international jury. As part of the competition, the participants of Dzintari Concert Hall in the Small Hall were evaluated in three rounds of the competition – Mandatory program and Free choice program categories.
