The Boxing Day match away against the twin company Oskarshamn, which was missing diligent scorers Patrik Karlkvist and Viktor Lodin, looked on paper like an excellent opportunity for three new points into the Värmland account. David Tomasek gave Färjestad the lead according to the program, but Oskarshamn’s newly acquired defender Anton Mylläri’s goal gave an uncertain cross into the first period break.
Färjestad’s forward Joakim Nygård put his signature, to put it mildly, at the beginning of the second period. First, Nygård scored, in the power play, 2–1. 30 seconds later, the same player broke free and coolly placed Färjestad’s third puck behind Oskarshamn’s goalkeeper Marek Langhamer.
Decided? Not at all. Ahti Oksanen had the chance to reduce the penalty – and took it. And with only nine seconds left until the second period break, Lukas Jasek equalized to make it 3–3.
– A tough start, otherwise it’s good, forward Jonas Engström summed up Oskarshamn’s second period in an interview with TV4 Play.
– We have to become a little more disciplined, countered Joakim Nygård, who said that the match picture, with undulating play, suited Oskarshamn best.
3,275 spectators, packed, created a setting worthy of a second-day match. However, one or a few individuals on the away stand chose to light flares instead, to which the organizer responded by emptying the entire away stand. After a few minutes of play, Färjestad’s heel was allowed to return to the stands.
When 7.46 remained of the third period, Mattias Göransson splashed in a new lead goal for Färjestad. But Oskarshamn managed to make a comeback in the match for the third time. Austin Wagner is the name of the player who scored 4-4, securing a home point that surely surprised many.
Penalties were required to determine the evening’s winner. Olli Palola scored the penalty that gave Oskarshamn the victory.
