Oskar Picht on Google Doodle today. Who was he and what was he famous for?

From time to time, the logo on the Google home page looks a bit different than usual. This is the so-called Google Doodle, dedicated to a specific event or person. On September 23, we can see an unusual typewriter and Braille alphabet, referring to Oskar Picht.

Google Doodle today is dedicated to Oskar Picht – the inventor of a typewriter for the blind. On September 23, 1907, Oskar Picht received a gold medal for his achievements at the International Typewriter Exhibition in Venice. Today’s Doodle was created by German artist Ute Dietz. In creating it, she focused on a typewriter for the blind and emphasized some of Oskar Picht’s attributes as a teacher and inventor.

Oskar Picht: Biography

Oskar Picht was born on May 27, 1871 in Pasewalk, Germany. He was the son of Wilhelm and Hermine. His father was a baker. Oskar graduated from the Pasewalk municipal school and the Higher School for Boys. From 1886 to 1891, he studied at the teachers’ college in today’s Police (Pölitz), after which he worked as a teacher.

Then, in the years 1897-1899, he acquired the knowledge necessary to become a teacher of the blind at the state center for the blind in Berlin-Steglitz. After completing his training, he worked at this center for several more years.

In 1902, Picht married Margarete Charlotte Conrad. The couple had three children.
