As part of the cinema release of “Oskar Fischinger – Music for the Eyes” on September 21st, director Harald Pulch and producer Ralf Ott are going on a nationwide cinema tour.

The documentary is a moving contemporary document about one of the most important film artists of the 20th century, whose influences can still be felt today. Born in Gelnhausen, Hesse, Fischinger’s path led via Frankfurt and Berlin to the USA, where he worked for the major studios. Narrated by his wife and colleague Elfriede Fischinger, the life and life’s work of the animation pioneer and inventor of the music video come back to the big screen in “Oskar Fischinger – Music for the Eyes”, digitally restored.

This year, the German Film Museum in Frankfurt has included exhibits by Oskar Fischinger in its permanent exhibition.

To the movie

Decades before computer graphics and music videos existed, film visionary Oskar Fischinger combined abstract shapes and colors with music in short films, such as jazz or Bach’s Third Brandenburg Concerto. In “Oskar Fischinger – Music for the Eyes” the life and life’s work of the animation pioneer and inventor of the music video come back to the big screen, digitally restored.

Fischinger’s widow Elfriede gives an insight into life with and work at his side – from the beginning in the 1920s in Gelnhausen, Hesse, through Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin to Hollywood in the USA, where the couple fled in 1936 to escape the Nazis emigrated. The abstract, color-intensive and very avant-garde works of Oskar Fischinger did not fit the era of the brown regime at all. Many of the films, the aesthetics and the music allow the viewer to immerse themselves deeply in the social life of the time. But even if many of the works already hint at the beginnings of the advertising world, people were still miles away from the hectic overload of Instagram or TikTok of our current reality. Every single film from Oskar Fischinger’s work is an aesthetic pleasure – music for the eyes.
