Osiel Cárdenas, former leader of the Mexican Gulf Cartel, was released from prison in the United States on Friday.
According to information on the U.S. Bureau of Prisons (BOP) website, August 30 was listed as Cardenas’ release date, but it has now been changed to “unknown,” meaning that he has left the facility, according to experts, and could have been released or be in the custody of another agency. One possibility is that he remains in the United States under “supervised release.”
Cárdenas was arrested in Mexico in 2003 and extradited to the United States in 2007. He pleaded guilty to cocaine and marijuana trafficking, money laundering and other charges for which he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The man who also created Los Zetas was serving his sentence in Terra Haute prison in Indiana and had his prison time reduced for “good behavior.” His release date was thus changed to August 30, 2024, and today his status changed to “unknown” in the release date box.
In Mexico, Osiel Cárdenas Guillén faces charges of organized crime and drug trafficking.
