Greek Rail Network Works Feverishly to Restore Service After Devastating Flood
The Tempe rail tunnel in Greece is facing a monumental task after torrential rains and subsequent flooding crippled essential infrastructure. Crews from the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) are engaged in a frantic race against time to clear debris and restore traffic along a critical commercial route linking Athens and Thessaloniki.
Amidst the daunting clean-up efforts, Panagiotis Terezakis, Managing Director of OSE, offered a beacon of hope. "Most of the water has receded from the tunnel," he stated in a recent interview. "Our teams have begun removing mud and debris, and the line will be meticulously cleaned with hoses before being reopened to traffic."
According to Terezakis, one lane is anticipated to be operational by late evening, allowing limited commercial transport to resume. "Commercial trains will be prioritized," he explained, "However, a backlog of freight has accumulated at both ends of the affected line in Athens and Thessaloniki.
The full restoration of both lanes and a return to normal service is targeted for Wednesday morning, pending favorable weather conditions.
Over 50 potholes caused by a collapsed drainage system within the tunnel’s 2-kilometer platform are being addressed, further complicating the already monumental task.
Frequent updates on the situation are being provided through various media outlets. The disruption has far-reaching implications, affecting national and international trade reliant on the efficient passage of goods through Greece’s crucial rail network.
