OSE explains: This is how the Suburban train entered the Metro lines –

Intense concern has been caused by the incident where a Suburban train entered the Metro tracks, with the Athens Prosecutor’s Office ordering an urgent investigation.

For its part, the OSE, with an official announcement after the incident was made public, explains how the incident happened with the train on Wednesday, October 9, while underlining that there was in no way the slightest danger for the passengers of both the suburban and the Metro.

As the OSE underlines, the train driver of the suburban train, although he saw the 2 light signals whose indicators warned him about the train entering the Metro lines, nevertheless violated both of them and stopped after passing them. It also clarifies that the Traffic Controller was immediately made available and retrained.

Detailed OSE response for the suburban train that entered a subway line

On Wednesday, October 9, at around 17:44, train 4245, running the KANTZA – ANO LIOSIA suburban route, headed towards the entrance of line 3 of the STASY.
The route is due to a drawing error of the SKA Traffic Controller.

The following are highlighted for this event:

1. In no case was there the slightest danger for the passengers of both the suburban train and those of the Metro. The train in question moved on a signal-marked (i.e. safe route), but which did not have accreditation for use in terms of Metro trains.
2. The movement of both the train in question and the rest is done by signalling, remote control that has been operating normally since 2004.
3. Both the suburban trains and those of the metro have the same interoperable gauge, which implies the absolute compatibility of gauges, so even if it entered the metro line it would not be “wedged” in the tunnel as excessively mentioned in a related publication.
4. The train driver of the suburban train, although he saw the 2 light signals whose indicators warned him about the train entering the Metro lines, nevertheless he VIOLATED both of them and after passing them he stopped and contacted the SKA.
5. Appropriate reversal instructions were then given and the normal route re-routed.

Epigrammatically:
1. All train movements are made by signaling – remote control.
2. There was no opposing train movement, but possible movement of an unauthorized train on a metro line.
3. The train driver violated two traffic lights, the indications of which gave him a clear warning of a possible entry into an unauthorized track.
4. The Traffic Controller was immediately made available and retrained with the question of his further employment as a Traffic Controller.

How did the incident happen?

The new incident was revealed by a publication of the “Newspaper of the Editors” according to which a Suburban train was ordered on Wednesday, October 9, in Dukissis Placentias, to enter the wrong line and specifically a subway tunnel. The train driver realized the mistake and tried, according to the report, to contact the station master. As it turned out, he himself made the decision to reduce speed and proceed slowly so that the error was noticed by the remote control system to avoid the worst. The driver had to reverse for about 300 meters to get out of the tunnel.

The new serious incident, where fortunately the worst was avoided, is unfortunately not the only one in the railway network, an extremely worrying incident, if you consider that the investigations into the tragedy in Tempe with the criminal omissions and acts that led to the loss have not yet been completed 57 of our fellow citizens, mainly young children…
