The association of certified engineers OSE with a press release issued clarifies what is happening with the huge guarantees set for ERGOSE engineers and dispels the paraphilology prevailing in the mass media. As he explicitly points out there are political responsibilities due to the chronic obsolescence, understaffing and underfunding of the railways.

Through the DB, it is clarified that the specific workers who were brought before the European investigator have not paid the exorbitant amounts that were originally set but remain free. This is because they have filed an appeal against the decision, as they consider the amount set as a guarantee huge and wish to reduce it.

The association also points out the unprecedented nature of the high bails, characterizing them as exterminating for public employees, while they lie against the fact that before they are even brought to trial and then tried, they are treated as guilty.

They request the intervention of ESIEA “in order to stop the slander of ERGOSE engineers by the media regarding the alleged payment of exorbitant amounts for the guarantees” and continue saying that “the development of railway transport has not, over time, been a strategic choice of the Greek state and of governments” leaving clear lines for political responsibilities.

They further emphasize that the railway is dominated by “the obsolescence, under-funding and under-staffing of all Public Bodies, which have the responsibility of maintaining, improving and building the infrastructure in their area of ​​responsibility. In the railway, insufficient funding and staff shortages, especially in critical and specialized specialties, have led to a dramatic shrinking of the railway network” and they add that “the real culprits are those who made the critical decisions and defined the future of the railway, leaving the companies understaffed and with an unclear development and operation plan”.

They also comment on the fact that “the state has completely abandoned the railway, governments vote on organizational charts (see OSE) that are not implemented (2019 and 2022)” and close by saying that “we ask for the appeal applications filed by the fellow engineers of ERGOSE, who are being prosecuted by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, to be treated sensibly and according to their real incomes. Otherwise, they will almost certainly be remanded in custody.

In the last few days, we have been watching a lot of publications, broadcasts and reports that mention that ERGOSE engineers who apologized to the European prosecutor, for the management of contract 717, were not jailed, because they allegedly paid the exorbitant guarantees. In fact, the workers in question are still free because they have appealed against the decision, asking for the amount of the guarantees to be reduced, while they are being treated as guilty, before they have even been tried, even continuing to work under these adverse conditions. It is unprecedented in the judicial annals to impose such an amount of exterminating guarantees on public employees for financial crimes of this nature, and it is unacceptable to drag them into the mass media.

We wonder from which sources this “information” was drawn and what interests are served by the attempt to smear and completely discredit the railway workers.

It has happened and will happen again to us who work on the railway and to a number of public officials who assume important responsibilities/responsibilities and are employed in public works, in the maintenance/management of networks or in other areas, to give explanations to justice for the execution of our work . Therefore, let the Mass Media not rush to set up courts. The only way is for colleagues to be judged by organized regular justice.

We ask the ESIEA to intervene in order to stop the slander of ERGOSE engineers by the media about the alleged payment of exorbitant amounts for the guarantees.

It is clear that the development of railway transport has not been, over time, a strategic choice of the Greek state and governments, with the result that today we are in the most difficult era of the Greek railway. Their choices were clear and concerned almost exclusively the development of road and air transport.

In the more general policy applied in the country for public infrastructures, from the memorandum period onwards, the obsolescence, under-funding and under-staffing of all Public Agencies, which have the responsibility of maintaining, improving and building the infrastructures in their area of ​​responsibility, dominate . In railways, insufficient funding and staff shortages, especially in critical and specialized specialties, have led to a dramatic shrinking of the railway network. The efforts of the railroad workers to prevent this shrinkage and degradation were deadlocked and futile.

The paradox is that fellow engineers of OSE and ERGOSE are accused by the Greek justice system of crimes of omission, related to the Tempe tragedy, while the real culprits are those who made the critical decisions and defined the future of the railway, leaving the companies understaffed and with an unclear development and operation plan.

The railway’s problem is the obsolescence policies that have been systematically applied in recent years, not the employees.

The state has completely abandoned the railway, governments pass organizational charts (see OSE) that are not implemented (2019 and 2022). To cover the operational needs of the OSE, more than 2000 staff positions are planned when the employees are currently only 650, without a plan to fill the required positions for the smooth operation of the Organization. Perhaps the culmination of all, is that at these critical moments, one year after the tragedy of Tempe, the Board of Directors of the OSE is unable to meet, due to an incomplete composition, from the end of January 2024.

The Association of Certified Engineers OSE, which represents working Engineers of the OSE, ERGOSE and HELLENIC TRAIN companies, stands by the prosecuted fellow engineers of OSE and ERGOSE and we emphasize that accusation does not mean guilt.
