OSCE Chairman-in-Office Announces Election of Malta as 2024 Chair and Mandate Extensions Despite Russian Opposition

The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, North Macedonian Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani, on Friday announced the election of Malta as the country that will chair in 2024, as well as the extension of the mandate of three key officials of the organization after months of blocking by Russia.

This, as “European Pravda” writes, is stated in a message on website OSCE.

According to the decision of the OSCE Ministerial Council, Malta will chair the organization in 2024, as well as the extension of the powers of Secretary General Helga Schmid, Representative on Freedom of the Media Teresa Ribeiro and High Commissioner on National Minorities Kairat Abdrakhmanov until September 2024.

The powers of the head of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Matteo Meccaci, were also extended.

According to Osmani, the consensus of OSCE members on the election of Malta as chairman in 2024 and personnel decisions “once again demonstrates the importance and effectiveness of reaching agreement through negotiations and compromise for the sake of our common goals and objectives.”

OSCE Chairman: Discussions on the expulsion of the Russian Federation are “exhausted” for now

“Despite our differences and disagreements, we have demonstrated the strategic vision necessary to continue our constructive efforts aimed at realizing and applying the OSCE’s competitive advantages through the work of its executive structures for the benefit of all our peoples,” the organization’s website quotes the head of the North Macedonian Foreign Ministry.

Let us recall that Russia blocked the work of the OSCE for many months, primarily opposing the election of Estonia as the presiding state in 2024. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov did not rule out until recently that will block the activities of the OSCEwithout voting on key personnel decisions.

Since all decisions in the OSCE must be made by consensus, due to Moscow’s obstruction, the remaining states made concessions and supported neutral Malta, to which the Russian Federation had already agreed.
