Oscar-winning actor William Hurt (71) dies

Actor William Hurt has died aged 71. His son confirms that in a statement to the American medium Deadline.

Hurt was nominated three times in a row for an Academy Award for Best Actor in the 1980s. He won it in 1985 for his role in Kiss of the Spider Woman† In 2005 he was nominated for the fourth time, for the film A History of Violence.

The younger generation probably knows Hurt mostly for his role as General Thaddeus Ross in Marvel’s superhero movies. In total, he appeared in five Marvel movies.

He started as a stage actor and his career as a film actor lasted more than forty years. His latest movie is The King’s Daughter in which he plays the Jesuit priest Père La Chaise. That movie was shot in 2014, but wasn’t released until last January.

Hurt was diagnosed in 2018 with prostate cancer, which had spread to his bones. His family says he died of natural causes: “It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of William Hurt, loving father and Oscar-winning actor, on March 13, a week before his 72nd birthday.”
