There will be no national entry from Luxembourg in the race for an “Academy Award for Best International Feature Film” at the 2025 Oscars. While other film nations have already sent their films into the very first round of nominations in recent days, nothing has been heard from the industry in the Grand Duchy. The Luxembourg Film Academy, which manages these entries, recently selected the film “Läif a Séil”, directed by Loïc Tanson and produced by Samsa Film, to represent Luxembourg at the Oscars and Goyas in 2024.

The deadline for applying for the 2025 Oscars would be October 2, 2024. When asked, however, the Managing Director of the Luxembourg Film Academy, Damien Frenzel, emphasized that after a call for entries, there were no submissions in the Oscar category once known as “Best Foreign Language Film.” However, the film must also have been produced in the country and released in Luxembourg cinemas between November 1, 2023 and September 30, 2024. That alone rules out many projects in the Luxembourg industry.

However, anyone who seriously strives for such a chance needs not only self-confidence, but also a lot of professional and financial support; and should at least have attracted attention at international festivals. The Auschwitz drama “The Zone of Interest” by Jonathan Glazer won in this category at the last Oscars.

It seems possible that Luxembourgers could still get a stage in the 2025 Oscar race through a roundabout route. For example, if another film nation chooses an entry in which Luxembourgers were involved in front of or behind the camera, or if one competes in categories such as animation or short films. Just remember the Oscar for Mr. Hublot or the nomination of short film specialist Cyrus Neshvad.

However, there is no information yet on this for the 2025 Oscars. There will probably also not be a case like that of the documentary film specialist Jerry Franck, who lives in the USA and runs a production company there with his wife and was once in the running for an Oscar.

However, according to Frenzel, Luxembourg companies have apparently responded that they would like to enter their works at other international film awards. However, this will only be communicated once a decision has been made.
