A quarter century of service by Mayor Carolyn Goodman and former Mayor Oscar Goodman was celebrated in Las Vegas style Tuesday morning. A monumental sculpture of these city figures was unveiled at the City Hall.
The bronze piece, created by master sculptor Brian Hanlon, measures 11 feet tall and stands on a 6½-foot base. Hanlon indicated that the work is valued at about $750,000.
The plaza at the entrance to City Hall has been named Carolyn B. Goodman Plaza. That project, located across from City Hall on Clark Street, will open next spring.
Tuesday’s event was coordinated by Oscar Goodman along with City Hall officials.
Carolyn Goodman was unaware that a statue had been placed at the entrance to City Hall early Monday morning. They only informed him that there would be an event in the Plaza, but did not give him any more details.
“Oscar and I have never been so moved to live in Las Vegas and find all of you, professionals who love Las Vegas like we do,” said Carolyn Goodman, her voice breaking. “We love our beautiful family, who has given us a life of meaning and purpose.”
Oscar Goodman’s remarks were brief, thanking the hundreds of leaders present and concluding with: “Believe it or not, I am speechless.”
The mayor’s last day will be Friday, when Shelley Berkley takes office. His last appearances will be at the Christmas opening of the Opportunity Village Magic Forest and at the Rio to present a Key to the City to the men’s show Chippendales.
As the couple left the event, Oscar Goodman was asked about his short-term plans. “Have another drink!” And in the long term? “Also another drink, and the same in the medium term. “We are going to enjoy life, as we always have.”
This is a developing story. Come back for more updates.
How might the artistic style and placement of the sculpture contribute to shaping public perception of the Goodmans’ legacy in Las Vegas?
