With 1,879 million dollars grossed worldwide, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ has become one of the highest grossing films in history. And not only that, but the public and the critics have welcomed it with enthusiasm and general applause, making it a triumph in all aspects. For this reason, as usually happens almost every year, many wondered if it was possible to see it nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, something that did not end up happening.
Traditionally, the Hollywood Academy has relegated superhero movies to technical categories. There are exceptions, such as the awards for Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix for playing the Joker or the historic nomination for ‘Black Panther’ for Best Picture. However, beyond these cases, it is difficult for a superhero event to sneak into the main categories. Thus, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ had to settle for a nomination for Best Visual Effects, although many fans considered that both the film and several of its actors deserved to be among the nominees.
Now, in an interview with Telegraph, one of its protagonists, Andrew Garfield, who returned to the saga with Tobey Maguire after playing Spider-Man twice before, has alluded to the subject. When asked what he thinks the Academy left the film out of the most important category, the actor answers the following: “It is the sixth highest-grossing film in the history of cinema. I personally feel satisfied with the response from the audience. I think that’s enough“.
Indeed, we all know that a nomination, or even a Best Picture award at the Oscars, does not guarantee that the film in question will go down in cinema history. There are many who have fallen into oblivion after winning the coveted award, while others have remained forever in the collective memory. Whether ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ deserved a Best Picture nomination is another debate, but that will go down in history as one of the most beloved films of our time is undoubtedly.
‘tick, tick… BOOM!
Who is nominated this year is Garfield himself in the category of Best Actor for his acclaimed work on the Netflix biographical musical ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It is his second nomination after opting for the statuette in 2017 for ‘Until the last man’.
However, the British interpreter is sure that this time he will not win the award either. This is how he explained it in another recent interview in Jimmy Kimmel’s show: “You can feel where the energy is going, even before the awards. When I got a Tony nomination, I was really worried. You look at the betting website and it says ‘Andrew Garfield is the favorite to win the fucking Tony.’ I better prepare a speech, I have to speak in front of all these people I admire.’ But this time, I have looked at the betting website and I am not the favourite, so I feel that I can only enjoy the night and applaud who I think will win. I won’t say his name, but I think we all know who I’m talking about.”.
The actor Garfield is referring to is undoubtedly Will Smith, favorite by far in all the pools for his work on ‘The Williams Method’. On March 28 we will discover the result.
