Tokyo (AFP) – The problems of former Japanese world number one Naomi Osaka continued after she was forced to retire from the Tokyo Tennis Championships on Thursday after complaining of stomach pains before her second round match against Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maya.

“It is a great honor for me to participate in the Tokyo Games in front of such a wonderful crowd here in Japan,” Osaka said in a statement released by the organizers.

“This tournament has been and will always be special for me and I wish I could go out and play the game, but my body didn’t allow it,” he added.

“Thanks for all your support this week and see you next year,” he added.

Osaka, crowned with four major Grand Slam titles, were looking to end a streak of performances in Tokyo, where they had been the title holder since the last time the tournament took place in 2019, especially after his ranking has dropped to 48th place in the world after his exit from the first round in the last three courses you have attended.

Osaka’s first round match in Tokyo against Australian Daria Savile lasted just seven minutes before his opponent injured his knee.
