Orthopedics and Rheumatology Researchers Receive Subsidies and Recognition for Breakthrough Solutions in Joint Preservation

This recognition is a nice boost for the researchers of Orthopedics, who have been receiving subsidies for their research efforts since 2006. Orthopedics’ long-term research program aims at joint preservation in cartilage damage and osteoarthritis and is aimed at diagnosis and treatment. “We want to be able to predict whether the cartilage in a knee joint responds to a treatment, so that we can provide more targeted treatment in the future. We are also investigating how we can ensure that the cells in the knee joint can produce proteins. Because we believe that good and sufficient protein production plays a role in the health of the joint,” says Prof. Dr. Tim Welting, professor of molecular cartilage biology and chair of the Orthopedics department.

Proud of subsidy
Researchers at Rheumatology are also very proud of having received the grant and the title ‘Research Center of Excellence’. prof. Dr. Annelies Boonen, professor of rheumatology and head of the Rheumatology sub-department, says: “Knowledge about causes and treatment options for rheumatic diseases has grown enormously. However, not all people with rheumatic diseases can still participate in society as they wish. In addition to disease characteristics, personal and environmental factors, also referred to as contextual factors, of the patient also play an important role in this. There is currently a lack of knowledge on how to include these contextual factors in the treatment of rheumatic diseases. If this is not taken into account, this can lead to over- but also under-treatment.”

Out of the box-denken
Welting: “We are honored that ReumaNederland recognizes our work with the predicate ‘Research Center of Excellence’ and has awarded us a subsidy for the next five years. It is an incentive for us to think outside the box and to continue researching breakthrough solutions for joint preservation.” Boonen can only confirm this: “Our research will contribute to better and more equal care for all our patients.” “And that is what we do it for: making an impact together on the lives of people with an orthopedic and rheumatic disease,” they conclude.
