February 29 according to the new style (February 29 also according to the old style) is the day of remembrance of St. John Cassian the Roman.

Cassian the Roman is a real historical character. He was a Christian monk and theologian who lived in the 4th-5th centuries AD in Gaul. Born into a wealthy family, from his youth he was interested in science, especially philosophy and astronomy. To continue his studies, Cassian went to Constantinople to visit John Chrysostom. From him he learned a virtuous life, retired to a monastery and lived there for a long time in silence and hard work. Then the monk went to the monasteries of Egypt and Cappadocia.

In the folk calendar, February 29 is the holiday of Kasyan’s Day, Kasyan the Leaping Day, Kasyan the Envious Man. By its signs one judges the weather and the harvest:

  • fog or snow on February 29 – for the summer harvest;
  • You can’t hear dogs or roosters on this day – there may be an epidemic or pestilence.

It is believed that dreams seen on the night of Kasyan are prophetic and will soon come true.

Cassian’s feast day falls on February 29 in leap years, and on February 28 in non-leap years. Because of these jumps in the date, Cassian’s personality has acquired a lot of signs and superstitions, and they extend not only to one day, but also to the entire leap year.

What not to do on February 29

Among the prohibitions, what you can’t do today is swearing, raising your voice, making a scandal, being jealous.

According to popular beliefs, this day is considered one of the most dangerous, demonic – everything that is in any way connected with this day will be unsuccessful.

It is not recommended to do any household work on this day – for example, washing, ironing, handicrafts, as everything will not go well. It is not advisable to baptize a child and have a wedding. You should not cut your hair and nails, or go out and talk to strangers – there is a risk of getting into trouble or getting sick.

What can you do on February 29

The help of St. John Cassian is sought in case of excessive passion for any passions or temptations (gambling addiction, alcoholism, drug addiction). They ask Cassian for help in studying, since the saint himself studied a lot. John Cassian the Roman is also prayed to as a protector from accidents.

Among the people, Kasyan has nothing in common with saints; moreover, he is considered the prototype of Koshchei the Immortal and Viy, who was described by Nikolai Gogol.
