Nicaragua’s hero of revolution makes the country a dictatorship again.
Power corrupts, it is said. It corrupts people. The desire for more power trumps everything else. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega is a prime example.
On Monday, the 76-year-old was sworn in for another period. At the same time, his wife, Rosario Murillo, was sworn in as vice president. Their “election victory” in November was expected. Almost 40 politicians from the opposition had been imprisoned by then. Among them were seven who wanted to challenge Ortega in the election.
