The government of Nicaragua will control all types of public events that take place in its territory, according to regulations published this Tuesday in the official newspaper La Gaceta, which alleges “citizen security” as well as “internal order.”
The regulations establish that producers, promoters and organizers of activities, events or public artistic shows must request a certificate or authorization for some type of show from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT).
The Ministry of the Interior is a state entity accused by human rights organizations of repressing and spying on critics of President Daniel Ortega.
The new regulatory framework applies “to national or other national natural or legal persons who are dedicated to carrying out activities, events or artistic shows public or in the national territory.”
Event producers must request the corresponding permits for this type of activities 30 days in advance.
Producers must also provide information about the activity they plan to hold, detailing audience numbers, equipment to be used, among other details.
Likewise, producers must, under this regulation, “refrain from intervening, financing or promoting issues, activities or topics of internal and external politics or activities that generate political proselytism as results.”
This measure comes six years after the start of the protests against President Daniel Ortega in April 2018, which left more than 300 dead and thousands injured and exiled, according to figures from human rights organizations.
Ortega classified the demonstrations as an attempted coup against his government, which has been in power for more than 15 consecutive years.
