Düsseldorf/Cologne – For years, the corona pandemic, a boom in online business and restructuring have ensured that more and more shops are leaving German city centers. This development does not stop at large retail chains. It doesn’t matter whether it’s C&A, Kaufhof, H&M or Primark – all of them have already announced further closures for this year or next. An overview of which companies are affected.

Kaufhof: Closing in Halle planned for 2023

The large wave of closures at Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof has ended for the time being. In 2020, the retail group had to close dozens of branches throughout Germany. Houses in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Essen and Bonn were also affected at the time. After Kaufhof last caused a stir with a reopening in Euskirchen, another closure is also planned. In January 2023, Kaufhof will say goodbye to Halle an der Saale. The branch on the market square in Halle should then be closed.

  • Galeria Kaufhof in Halle an der Saale (Marktplatz 20, 06108 Halle) – Closing on January 31, 2023

Closure: Primark is closing branches in Germany

In March, it was also very surprising to hear that the fashion discounter Primark was planning to close branches in Germany for the first time. In Germany, the fashion chain has opened 32 branches since entering the market. For a long time, the signs pointed to expansion. Now closures have been announced for the first time. In 2023, the Primark branches in Loop5 in Weiterstadt and in the Schoss-Straßen-Center in Berlin will be closed.

  • Primark in Weiterstadt (Gutenbergstraße in Loop5) – branch closes on January 31, 2023
  • Primark in Berlin (Walther-Schreiber-Platz 1 in the Schloss-Straßen-Center) – branch closes on April 30, 2023

H&M: 240 branches worldwide are to close – including in Germany

As early as 2021, the fashion retailer H&M caused a great deal of interplay with the closure of some branches and the opening of new ones at other locations at the same time. The bottom line is that the number of H&M stores is decreasing worldwide. This will also continue in 2022. The fashion chain plans to close around 240 branches worldwide this year. This will also affect several H&M stores in Germany, even if it is not yet clear exactly where. But it started in the spring. H&M already closed its branch in Velbert (NRW) in March.

Media-Markt-Saturn: 13 closures already in 2021

Not only the fashion trade has to step down due to the Corona consequences. The electronics chains Media Markt and Saturn have already closed branches. A total of 13 locations will be closed in late summer and autumn 2021. Among other things, Media Markt and Saturn stores in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Essen and Münster were affected.

Conrad: Almost all branches in Germany will close in 2022

The electronics retailer Conrad wants to close almost every branch in Germany in 2022. Of the currently ten classic Conrad branches, only one will remain after the clear-cutting – the market in Wernberg-Köblitz. The other branches will be closed. With regard to private customers, Conrad wants to focus more on online trading in the future.

Staples to close all stores due to bankruptcy

With Staples, one of the largest office supplies retailers is also saying goodbye to the German retail sector. OffceCentre GmbH, to which Staples belongs, is insolvent. An investor could not be found. Therefore, Staples is closing all 50 branches in Germany, 17 of them in NRW. Around 700 employees are affected by the closures. Big clearance sales are already happening.

Real: closures and takeovers also in 2022

The hypermarket chain Real is also disappearing from many cities. In the course of the Real break-up, the number of Real branches is reduced from around 270 to just over 60. Most of the former Real stores are taken over by other supermarkets such as Kaufland, Edeka, Globus or Rewe, or are finally closed. In 2022, there are still some Real closures to come. Eight Real branches are still affected in NRW alone – including in Dortmund, Cologne, Neuss and Witten. (bs) More news on the 24RHEIN homepage.
