While Hojbjerg has absolutely shined under the Portuguese coach’s leadership, starting all 14 of Tottenham’s Premier League matches this season, you can see where Mourinho is coming from.
If something were to happen to the former Bayern Munich stalwart, then it’s highly conceivable that Tottenham’s season would collapse.

Hojbjerg’s aggressive nature and exquisite reading of the game allow the likes of Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, and Tanguy Ndombele to express themselves without having to do most of the dirty work.
However, we’re now at a point where it would presumably require any potential defensive midfield additions to settle for a bench spot.
In that sense, it’s similar to Tottenham’s search for a substitute for Kane – finding a player happy to sit in the shadows is presumably a tough job.

That being said, Mourinho has done a great job in tuning the Tottenham team since he replaced Mauricio Pochettino.
He has solved Kane’s dilemma admirably with the signing of Carlos Vinicius, so hopefully the trick can be repeated with Hojbjerg.
