Animal Ambulance received the first reports of the wandering emu on Thursday. Together with the police, he tried to catch the animal, but it didn’t always work out. The animal had to be caught as it could cause dangerous situations on the road.
According to ratite expert Victor Duurland, it’s not that difficult to catch an emu. When the emu was seen again on Saturday in a meadow in Heemserveen, near Lutten, the ratite expert leapt into action. Together with a boa constrictor, three animal ambulance workers and the owner of the pasture, Duurland managed to capture the animal.
“The trick is to approach the animal calmly and calmly,” explains Duurland. “You pick them up from behind the wing attachment and can lift them into a trailer.”
Police had previously requested that the animal be remotely stunned. It’s a bad idea, says the bird expert, because the bird won’t survive. “They’re not horses. You shoot an animal like that.”
The owner of EMU has not yet come forward. The animal is now grazing with Duurland and doing well.
